Tangent in the 80s

Recently Sam and Bryony were so inspired by a mid-week foray into the Melbourne music scene to see the flamboyant Client Liason (seriously check them out, it’s the 80s all over again), that we began imagining what our beloved studio would be like in the corporate boom of 1980s Australia. Well truthfully, Rolf and Sue know better than anyone, but deny that they were ever there in that era.

Tangent in the 80s is all about the high life, living fast and playing hard. We’re all about the latest technologies and long client lunches on the diners club card. We believe in unrestrained fashion and graphics dripping in an exciting excess of colour and pazazz. We’re results driven, and we get the job done.

We are Tangent. Let’s do Business.

Now, let’s return to 2015 – we’re still like that. (or so we’d like to think…)

Bowl’d Over

Today we launched our latest web creation, a fully responsive scrolling site for new Hampton Street superfood destination Holy Bowly.

We’ve designed the site to showcase (and celebrate) healthy food culture in the form of a freeform menu. A big part of this project was digesting (figuratively of course, although we’d happily eat everything) the huge amount and changing nature of exactly what Holy Bowly had to offer. This meant presenting it in a format that wasn’t a rigid priced menu subject to change, but rather an exciting yet detailed presentation of what you can expect from a visit to Holy Bowly at any time of the year.

From Acai to Chia, Quinoa to Kombucha, there’s no shortage of amazing healthy wares on offer at Holy Bowly.
Take a look and be sure to pay them a visit, your stomach will thank you.

Just Surf the Net

We can’t get enough of this. For a solid week this beautiful homage to the internet’s early days has shown up again and again in our music rotation, featuring such timeless soundbites as the “you’ve got mail” AOL alert and of course the stunning orchestral arrangement of a 56k modem establishing a dial-up connection, all over a bunch of cuts from instructional internet videos of the 90s. I remember being as excited as that kid when I realised I could search the net for cool things like star wars images.

The internet has of course since grown up a lot, for good and bad, so take a hilarious waltz down memory lane and reminisce in style about a time when there was no youtube, facebook or twitter, and the internet was an innocent place where pages took minutes to load. Enjoy.

Sebastian’s Tuck Shop

Some quick snaps of a cool new project. Iconic Hampton Street eatery Sebastian’s Food and Wine has launched ‘TuckShop’. Just like the old school tuck shop; place your order in the morning, then come in pick it up at lunchtime. Perfect for busy local businesses who don’t have the time or luxury to eat out. Just like back in the day ‘cept swap the Pies and Chocolate Big M’s for fresh, homemade and tasty.

It was all we could do to keep our hands off the food long enough to snap off a few shots. Of course, what’s great food without a cool menu and some nice packaging, just makes it taste better! Our pick is the Quinoa Chicken Salad, and if you want a treat try the Salted Caramel Slice it’s too good.

To Google Glass, or not…

Often clients ask us about new media channels. Whether they should be in them, using them, compatible with them, aware of them… “I want an App”. I need an Online Shop, we should use AdWords, we require a FaceBook Page, we want to be on Instagram, we should be on Twitter, and so on. The answer usually is yes, you do, lets do it. But sometimes, you just gotta asks yourself… do you really need it?

Sam scores flash new toy for Tangent.

On 20 May, Sam and Rolf embarked on a mission to find out all about the elusive new Adobe Creative Cloud (and get a free breakfast) at the Comp Now Adobe seminar.

Dilligent as always, Sam listened carefully and in turn correctly answered a question about the new pricing structure for Adobe Creative Cloud to score a Wacom Intuos graphics tablet worth $399.

The flash new toy was embraced by the entire Tangent team (believe it or not, we’re a bunch of nerds) and Sam even whipped up a freelance job on it that night.

Tangent gets a facelift.

Like every other branding and design agency on the planet, our own web presence is a constant moving target. However, after many a round table discussion and countless hovering art director sessions, we’ve finally launched our brand spanking new website complete with a sexy new interface, streamlined navigation a bigger and better case study and folio section.

As well as revamping the look and feel of Tangent’s interwebs HQ, we’ve added a bit more about what it is we do (check out the sweet animations – a Samdrew collaboration). We’re hoping the new site gives more of an immediate snapshot at our work and communicates more instantaneously what it is we do.

Clapham Rebrand & Web Presence

Clapham create bespoke gardens. Tangent create bespoke brands… a perfect match.  Inspired by the stunning projects Clapham have undertaken Tangent delivered a brand reflecting the calibre of the landscapes designed by company principal Jamie Clapham. The brand was first rolled out to stationery, followed by a “knock-out” web presence.  Showcasing Clapham’s stunning designs and expertise in landscape architecture was the primary focus. Press releases, videos and a blog help complete the Clapham story. Clapham turn the ordinary into the extraordinary and it was our aim to convey this.  We dare you to visit their site and not want to commission them to redesign your garden. The images of their projects are eye candy of dribbling proportions… enjoy!

After considered research of the company and the hydronic heating industry, the Tangent team got to work creating a fresh new look that tapped into who they are and what they do. This was then refined to a set of collateral for use across all marketing and branding opportunities.

Tangent studio dog Kevin enters doggy talent search.
Every year, paper merchant K.W. Doggett release an appropriately dog-themed calendar of which they mix up the mood and theme annually. Being a bunch of massive dog lovers, we at Tangent always look forward to our annual copy.

For their 2015 calendar, Doggett have partnered with Four&Sons (what a great concept – dogs and culture collide) and have asked for submissions of Melbourne studio dogs.
This was it, Kevin’s golden moment to become a C-list celeb. How could we resist pimping out Kev?

Sam’s Back!

Samuel J. has returned from his overseas jaunt! And we’re happy to say he has returned ‘Chocka’s full of Kultcha’ as promised. His mind is broadened, his body stretched and bent in a variety of experiences. Most importantly however, his design horizons are forever expanded. There’s just something about the European approach to all things design, it permeates their everyday lives and informs the built environment. Tangent Street Cred

Tangent hit the streets. We have finally signed our new building and made our mark on Hampton Street.

Just as we were admiring our own magnificence, and the creation of a new Melbourne icon to replace the Skipping Girl, a test came. The day after the signage was installed we experienced the warmest July day on record. In typical Melbourne fashion the sunny day suddenly clouded over and we were lashed by a severe tropical thunderstorm in the afternoon. Still there, so the glue must have been ok.

Nothing wrong with the climate then, must just be a blip. This image was captured at 4.34pm just as the storm passed. Weather like this reminds us why climate change is no joke… here’s some cool people doing their best to educate kids about what it all means… coolaustralia.org

Middy’s Offers More…

Rollout of new brand positioning completed for long standing client Middy’s. Delivering the ‘Offering You More’ proposition to market was a challenge of both magnitude and time constraint.

The revamp required reconsideration of all branding elements and collateral, essentially a complete brand repositioning. The core consumer facing web asset required a ground up rethink, with new nav, interface and content dissementation, whilst maintaining plug in functionality and features across over 200 pages of content. Go Cadel

As you can see by this month’s site background theme…  it’s go Cadel time! EPO, horse tranquilliser, growth hormones, blood transfusions, peptides, whatever it takes, you can do it, get on it.  The lycra is harder to forgive, but if you have to you must.  We support you, we’ll stay up late to watch you, we’ll drink more coffee just to urge you on..  if our designs become a bit erratic this month… we blame you.

Well done Cadel, you had a crack, you did your best, but this years Tour just wasn’t meant to be.

Tangent WorkHealth Safety Check:

All team members were today subjected to rigorous work place health checks to determine fitness and suitability to work. Stakes were high as failure to pass would result in immediate dismissal. Happily Sam and Andrew led the team and have been nominated as WorkHealth posters boys with their 84 and 85 cm respective waist measurements. However Sam’s dodgy ticker could explode at any moment and Andrew is diabetic from excessive energy drink consumption. Bryony’s self declaration of excellent health was shot down quickly with never seen before cholesterol levels, subsequently offset with chocolate mud cake and double cream for morning tea. Rolf is disputing 90cm waist measurement and requests remeasure. Susan claimed immunity and refused to declare results.

All team members failed alcohol intake test, this has been attributed to sample tampering. So, appears the greater design community is stuck with Tangent for the forseeable future…

Meet Kevin…

The Tangent team officially expanded this morning with the arrival of Kevin, Rolf and Sue’s 8-week-old Beaglier. Although a litte green when it comes to design, Kevin will bring a wealth of moral support and happiness to the studio taking the role as our official mascot. He’s already taken a fascination in Pantone swatches, in particular Pantone 325… Stay tuned for further adventures of our new four legged friend.

Sam hits a perfect 180!

On November 20 a perfect storm of Sam’s relentless practice, a slow-news day and 20% humidity all came together in a perfect three dart throw of 180 points.
Sam nailed three TRIPLE TWENTYS in a row to secure the rare and highly sought after score.
Congratulations were given immediately, as was a round of beers and a commemorative plaque was installed on the dart cork board.
Well done Sam…well done.
